Fine-Tuning the Aeration Control for Energy-Efficient Operation in a Small Sewage Treatment Plant by Applying Biokinetic Modeling

Wastewater treatment is an energy-intensive process for treating liquid-phase pollutants in urban settlements. The aerobic processes of the biological involve a significant air demand. An optimal control strategy could be used to minimize amount excess entering system due safety factors applied design procedures. A plant-wide mechanistic modeling approach including activated sludge model and one-dimensional settler was proposed as effective tool predicting actual demand selecting aeration strategy. In this study, sewage plant receiving strong influent flow investigated. At ages 14–18 days, capable achieving 90% organic matter reduction 85% nutrient reduction. By applying constant dissolved oxygen concentration 1.5 mg/L, decreased by 25%, which further increased 10% if cascade ammonium at peak periods. dependence energy on temperature formulated, meaning operators select setpoint consumption while effluent quality requirements were met.
